Dear Heloise: Because I don't drink a lot of milk often, I buy a quart of lactose-free milk. There are several varieties. It lasts longer than regular milk, way past the date that is stated on the carton — sometimes two to four weeks longer. I've used it for cooking and baking, and I see no difference in the results. — Carol M., in Omaha, Nebraska
Label sound-off
Dear Heloise: I'm sounding off on manufacturers who print instructions on labels that are impossible to read, especially with colorful backgrounds. These types of labels are very difficult for seniors to see. Black printing on white labels is so much easier to read. — Frances R., in Manchester, New Hampshire
Just like mom made
Dear Heloise: Packaged cookies such as oatmeal or chocolate chip can be warmed in the microwave or oven for a tasty snack. They soften up and taste like freshly baked homemade cookies. — Gina B., in North Plainfield, New Jersey
Toenail fungus
Dear Heloise: Does iodine help treat toenail fungus? — Conchita B., via email
Conchita, toenail fungus is hard to get rid of. Iodine doesn't work well because it can't penetrate beneath the nail. It's better to use store-bought creams every day. If they don't work, a doctor can give you stronger medicine. Make sure to keep your feet clean and dry to help them heal.
If the fungus won't go away, talk to a doctor, and don't waste any time with home tricks. — Heloise
Strawberry shortcut
Dear Heloise: Now that it's strawberry season, I use Twinkies when making a strawberry shortcake. Cut them lengthwise, and you'll also have your whipped cream! — Marlene F., via email
Stronger flush
Dear Heloise: A friend once told me to hold the toilet handle down a little longer when a stronger flush is needed. This has worked well with my new water-saving toilet. Doing this still saves water every time you flush. — Sarah, in North Carolina
Small hand towels
Dear Heloise: I like to set out small terry-cloth hand towels in the bathroom for guests. The towels often have fringed edges or some decorative embroidery. Recently, I tried to buy new ones but can't find them in stores, and I've also been unsuccessful online. I've been able to find yearend holiday ones but not other ones for use at other times of the year.
Do you or your readers have any suggestions about where to find these items? — Joy, in Portland, Oregon
Joy, use kitchen towels. There are many cute patterned kitchen towels on the market, and no one would know the difference. — Heloise
