Will UNC baseball beat USC and advance to College World Series?
UNC baseball continues the 2026 NCAA Tournament as the No. 5 national seed, set to host the Chapel Hill Super Regional for the third time in a row and fourth time in the last five seasons at Boshamer Stadium.Â
The Tar Heels (48-11-1) will face the USC Trojans (47-16) in a best-of-three series, which starts Friday, June 5 (3 p.m., ESPN2). Game 2 is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, and will be televised on ESPN. If Game 3 is necessary, that time and TV designation will be announced after Game 2.
The winner of the Chapel Hill Super Regional will be matched up with No. 4 overall seed Auburn (42-20) or Ole Miss (39-21) at the College World Series in Omaha.
Here's a breakdown of the Chapel Hill Super Regional and a prediction for which team will head to Omaha.
Pitching is the headliner for UNC baseball vs USC in Chapel Hill Super Regional
Any conversation about the Tar Heels vs. the Trojans has to start with the strength of both pitching staffs. USC is fourth nationally in team ERA at 3.48, which leads the remaining 16 teams in the NCAA Tournament, and UNC is seventh in the country at 3.85, which trails only Auburn (3.62) and the Trojans among teams chasing a College World Series berth.
USC junior lefty Mason Edwards (8-0, 1.85 ERA) headlines the list with the second-best ERA in the nation and paces pitchers with 160 strikeouts. UNC freshman Caden Glauber (10-0, 2.06 ERA), Tar Heel ace Jason DeCaro (10-2, 2,54 ERA) and USC's Grant Govel (10-2, 2.93 ERA) aren't far behind as three of the premier arms in the tournament. Any of those four pitchers, plus a few more on both sides, are capable of creating an advantage that can be the difference between going to Omaha or going home.
Tar Heels vs Trojans offense in NCAA Tournament
USC had some eye-popping numbers in its four regional victories, averaging 16.2 runs. The Trojans are 13th in doubles (131), 35th in home runs (88) and 36th in total hits (590). But UNC has been more consistent across the board this season, sitting 11th in run production with an average of 8.4 runs per game through 60 games. The Tar Heels are 11th in walks (336), 21st in on-base percentage (.416), 26th in triples (16), 33rd in hits (591), 37th in doubles (118) and 53rd in home runs (78). UNC hasn't displayed as much pop as USC in the NCAA Tournament, but the Tar Heels have more ways to score.
UNC baseball super regional history vs USC struggles on road, record against good teams
The Tar Heels are hosting a super regional for the fifth time since 2019, including the third year in a row. But UNC has lost three of its last four super regional series in Chapel Hill, posting a 5-6 record in that stretch with the lone series win coming in 2024 against West Virginia. The Heels have consistently beaten good teams this year, posting a 14-7 record in Q1 games, and USC has struggled to a 3-11 mark in Q1 opportunities. UNC has dominated at the Bosh with a 31-6-1 home record and the Trojans have an 11-13 road record. All of those numbers might not mean as a much in the postseason, but they do matter.
UNC baseball vs USC, Chapel Hill Super regional prediction for 2026 NCAA TournamentÂ
The Trojans fought on with an impressive showing against Texas A&M in College Station, but UNC presents a completely different challenge. With their balance offensively and dependable defense, the Tar Heels have multiple avenues to create advantages. Following a devastating Game 3 loss to Arizona in the 2025 Chapel Hill Super Regional, UNC will bounce back at the Bosh with a Game 3 clincher against USC to snag a spot in the College World Series for the second time in three seasons.
