HIGH SCHOOL TRACK & FIELD
Hickory Christian Academy ninth-grader Madelyn Jane Carter was already a varsity state champion before she even hit high school.
As an eighth-grader, Carter won the 3,200-meters at the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 2A Indoor Track meet in February. On Saturday, she added cross country state champion to her quickly growing list of accomplishments.
Carter won the NCISAA 2A state title at McAlpine Park in Charlotte with a time of 19:11.34. It was nearly 31 seconds faster than the No. 2 finisher in the race. It also helped lead the Hickory Christian girls to a second-place team finish in the meet.
The Knights put up 54 points in the meet, coming up just one point short of St. Thomas More Academy. The girls team has now finished in the top two of a state track or cross country meet for the sixth time over the past three years.
Eighth-grader Lilly Huckabee (seventh place) and freshmen Abby Spencer (11th place) and Eva Cate Gilreath (13th place) also had strong showings for the HCA girls.
On the boys side, freshman Skylar Burns turned in a time of 18:35.57. It was good for 17th place and the top finish of the day for an HCA athlete. Sophomore Joshua Maier also cracked the top 20 with a 20th place 18:47.97. The Hickory Christian boys finished third as a team with 121 team points. Rocky Mount Academy won the meet with Rocky Mount runners finishing 1-4 and ninth on the day.
University Christian's Mason Hamrick took 22nd to lead the Barracudas to an eighth-place team finish. The University Christian girls took seventh with Kinsley Tompkins and Jaeden Montalbano leading the way. They finished 35th and 38th, respectively.
