FROM SIDE GIG TO BUSINESS
McDowell County native started mowing lawns at 15. Five years later, he has a business, employees.
Since 2021, Clearview Lawn Care & Property Maintenance has provided McDowell County residential and business properties with neatly trimmed lawns and quality landscaping.
Owned by Evan Clark, Clearview Lawn Care is celebrating its fifth anniversary this year. The business is based in the Glenwood community of McDowell. Clark said he started the business when he was 15 years old, and it started by accident. As a teenager, he mowed a couple of lawns for local customers just to earn a little side money. As others noticed his work, more people asked him to mow their lawns and do their trimming.
"I was actually planning to be an engineer, but I realized that there was money to be made doing this," Clark said, adding that he started out doing the work by himself.
"I joked and told people that I would not be doing this for a long time but as we have grown, I realized that I want to do this for the long run and pursue this as my business," he said.
He said this is something people need to have done and his business often provides this work for customers who are unable to do it themselves.
"We just enjoy being able to see a finished result on their property," Clark said.
The young business owner now has three employees: his brother Max Clark, Carter Dowdle and Gavyn Sheehan.
He said the vast majority of his business does mowing, trimming and landscape work for residential and commercial properties. In addition, the firm installs retaining walls and provides mulch. The landscaping work is done during the winter months, said Clark.
Clearview Lawn Care & Property Maintenance now has 120 regular customers in the McDowell County area but over the years has had as many as 500 customers.
"We are a full landscape service," Clark said.
Clearview Lawn Care & Property Maintenance is rated five stars on Google, Clark said.
