Meet the Rotary Club of Marion's Students of the Week
On Thursday, the Rotary Club of Marion recognized the Students of the Week.
The club recognized Emma Kate Brackin and Lauren Roland of McDowell Early College as the Students of the Week. They were introduced by Rotarian Sarah Washburn and received certificates from President Dave Watson.
Brackin is the daughter of Brandi and Jay Lyon of Marion. She is in the 12th grade at McDowell Early College.
As for her future plans, she wants to become an ER nurse and get her master’s degree and NBA (Nurses Bargaining Association). She plans to work her way up into healthcare administration to better the ER and triage conditions in hospitals.
Her school or community recognitions include currently being a senior at McDowell Early College and being involved with several academic, leadership and service organizations. She serves as the president of HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America), where she leads her peers and helps promote opportunities in healthcare. As HOSA president, she organized and led a blood drive in partnership with the American Red Cross, which exceeded its donation goal and was able to make a positive impact in our community. She is also a member of the Student Council and National Honor Society. She has maintained the A Honor Roll for the past three years and received the Presidential Gold Award for Academic Excellence.
Her extracurricular activities include HOSA and Student Council. She is also the social media adviser in the Student Council. She works at the Corpening YMCA as a lifeguard and swims at the high school.
As for her interests, she enjoys shopping, swimming, singing and spending time with her friends and family.
Roland is the daughter of Seth and Shannon Roland of Marion. She is a “super senior” or in the 13th grade at MEC.
As for a college or university, she plans to attend East Carolina University and wants to finish out her bachelor’s degree in biology and then attend ECU’s dental school to get her Doctor of Dental Medicine degree.

Her school or community recognitions, awards or accomplishments include being actively involved in several leadership and service organizations at school. She serves as president of the Key Club, where she helps organize and support service projects including the school and county variety and talent shows. She also serves as secretary of the National Honor Society. In addition, she received the Presidential Gold Award for her GPA at McDowell Technical Community College.
Her extracurricular activities include the Key Club and National Honors Society. She works roughly 35 hours per week at CVS and is a leader with her church’s youth group. She participates in mission trips during the summer.
As for her interests, she enjoys shopping, fashion, biology and spending time with friends.
