Forty-four years ago this week, Luther Hodges Jr., a Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, visited McDowell County to attend a reception in his honor at the Lemon Tree Inn. Approximately 100 people turned out to meet the candidate. Hodges, a former Charlotte banker, was campaigning for the Senate seat held by Republican Jesse Helms. During the week of Jan. 9, 1978, a snow storm in McDowell County forced schools to send students home early. This school bus was involved in an accident on Airport Road near Hilltop House.

During the week of Jan. 9, 1978, McDowell County sheriff’s deputies, working with a federal agent, discovered this large liquor still in the Mount Hebron community of Old Fort. The 16-barrel operation was found on a mountainside off Mount Hebron Road. No arrests were made when this photo was published. Shown at the site were (from left) Deputy David Sigmon and Sheriff J. Hubert Haynes. Haynes estimated that 400 to 500 gallons of mash were poured from the barrels.
