» First United Methodist youth are sponsoring Homeless Awareness Night to raise awareness of poverty and homelessness in McDowell County. This is done in observance of Homeless Awareness Week Nov. 16-24. On Saturday, Nov. 16 from 6-8 p.m. youth will be serving a free meal to the public, music will be provided for entertainment, along with guest speakers bringing information about ways to reach out to the homeless in our community. At 8 p.m, youth and volunteers will walk to the courthouse lawn, where a candlelight vigil will be held to raise awareness to this event. Monetary donations can be made to the FUMC Emergency Fund in which funds are used to help those in need. Donations will also be taken at the door to support local homeless shelters. Youth are also collecting items that are greatly needed by shelters. These items include bleach, Lysol, powdered laundry detergent, dish liquid, Pine Sol, pillows, blankets and towels. » Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church youth are conducting a shoe drive fundraiser through Dec. 14 to raise funds for the church’s building fund. Anyone can help by donating gently-worn, used and new shoes. Shoe donations are accepted every Wednesday from 6-7:30 p.m. and Sunday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon at 115 E. Wilhemenia St., Marion. » Nealsville Church of God will have a fall bazaar on Saturday starting at 6 a.m. with an all-you-can-eat country breakfast and a silent auction until noon. The church has a baby equipment and resource closet (B.E.A.R.) for needed baby items, clothing and community resources to low-income families and parents struggling to care for their children.
