Fire truck hits man on riding mower

A man driving a lawn mower on U.S. 221 South was struck by a fire truck sending him to the hospital serious injuries, according to a report from the N.C. Highway Patrol.

The report by Trooper G.A. Tupper states on Sunday, Sept. 29 around 8 p.m., James Marvin McKinney, of Old Linville Road in Marion, was driving on U.S. 221 South with a Grab and Go lawnmower with no headlights. Levi Pittman, member of the Ashford-North Cove Fire Department, came up behind McKinney in a fire truck, swerved to miss him, but collided with the lawn mower. The lawn mower overturned and McKinney was ejected causing serious injuries, the report said.

The fire truck hit McKinney’s lawn tractor traveling approximately 45 mph. McKinney was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, and later charged with careless and reckless driving.

There was an estimated $4,500 in damages to the fire truck, and $125 damages to the mower.
