From Our Archives: Here's a look back at this week in 1998

Twenty-three years ago this week, Keisha Woodard, a first-grade student in teacher Ellen Mace’s class at North Cove Elementary School looked out the window at what seemed like endless rain. But she wasn’t too upset about the dreary weather that week. She said she planned on playing inside.

Twenty-three years ago this week, these North Cove students celebrated some successful years as these honor chains outside their classroom clearly showed. Students got a link added to their construction paper chains for things like making the honor roll, getting an A on a test and having perfect attendance. Showing off their chains were (from left) Ashley Brewer, Kelly Buchanan, Rachel English and Shawn Buchanan. They were all fifth-graders in teacher Penny Jackson’s class.

Twenty-three years ago, McDowell Lady Titan junior Aletha Corpening drove to the basket during a game. During the week of Feb. 21, 1998, McDowell High (20-3 overall, 9-0 Northwestern 4A) clinched the NW4A regular season title with an 82-70 victory against Freedom in overtime.

Twenty-three years ago this week, students Jon-Erik Huffman, left, and Andrew Watkins were in charge of taking care of the school flags. Once a day and during inclement weather, the flag at the school must be raised and lowered by the students.

Twenty-three years ago this week, the Marion Kiwanis Club celebrated its 75th anniversary at the Marion Community Building. Among those present were, from left, District Secretary Bill Wirth, Division Three Lt. Gov. Benson Jones, Carolinas District Gov. Stanley Perry and Kiwanis President Ryan Smith.

During the week of Feb. 21, 1998, McDowell Head Start kids got a grand tour of the Marion Fire Department. Marion Fire Education Officer Terry DePoyster talked to the 3-, 4- and 5-year-olds from the Head Start program. The children, all students in Susan Cole’s class, got to look at equipment firefighters use to put out different types of fires. After a short Sesame Street video, they were taken on a tour of the fire station.

During the week of Feb. 21, 1998, The McDowell News published a feature article about the Morehead Cemetery during Black History Month. This historically African American cemetery has existed for generations and it was separated from Oak Grove Cemetery, which has been historically White. The two cemeteries were separated by the Peavine railroad line due to the segregation laws of the past. Since this story appeared in 1998, the Morehead Cemetery has been restored and is now maintained by the city of Marion.

During the week of Feb. 21, 1998, the McDowell High NJROTC Explorer Post 808 presented the opening ceremony for the Boy Scouts of America’s annual awards and recognition banquet in Lincolnton. This was the fourth time NJROTC members from McDowell High were invited to the banquet.

During the week of Feb. 21, 1998, music was in abundance at a program at Pleasant Gardens Elementary School celebrating Black History Month. Gospel, jazz and call-and-response audience participation were all included in the tribute. In this photo, Barbara and Joe Conley of the Conley Family Singers performed for the audience.

During the week of Feb. 21, 1998, McDowell Lady Titan sophomore Brandi Westmoreland makes a shot at a basketball game. Westmoreland was voted the Northwestern 4A’s Player of the Year in the second NW4A Media All-Conference voting that took place at that time.

During the week of Feb. 21, 1998, gasoline prices in McDowell County kept falling. The prices for gas had fallen during the last few weeks in February 1998. The average cost of gas across the nation, including all grades and taxes, was about $1.12 per gallon during the previous week. In McDowell County, the pump prices hit a low of around $0.97 for regular unleaded. Analysts said at the time continuing hostilities with Iran could push prices up in the near future.
