Autopsy: Cirrhosis, not snakebite, killed McDowell woman
Autopsy reports released this week prove that it was natural causes, not a snakebite, that claimed the life of a Marion woman on Memorial Day. The documents stated that Pamela Renae Summers, 47, of Reel Hollow Road died of cirrhosis of the liver.

School Board: Improved facilities, athletics hall of fame and more
When students return to McDowell Public Schools next week, many will see great improvements to grounds and facilities. Associate Superintendent Dr. Mike Murray reported to the School Board that all the summer work is on schedule. Meanwhile McDowell High is forming a committee to launch the school's athletics hall of fame, and plans are coming together for the proposed career tech magnet school under consideration.

Police seek clues in disappearance of Marion teen
Police know that Diana Hernandez Yanez is alive, but they don't know where. Yanez, 14, of Yancey Street in Marion left home on Monday, July 21 after her mother, Francisca Hernandez Yanez, went to work.

Accomplice in Zilpha Lowery murder case avoids prison
Robin Whited's guilty plea and subsequent probationary sentence provided little consolation to a family who has mourned their murdered loved one for 15 years. Don Robin Whited, 42, of Swords Creek, Va. pleaded guilty in McDowell County Superior Court Monday to accessory after the fact of murder.

Like so many other folks, I am very proud to have the Maxwell M. Corpening Jr. Memorial YMCA in my hometown. It is a first-class place where people can get in shape and improve their health. It is also a fitting memorial to the Corpening family and their remarkable legacy.

Recovering Nebo principal will be there when bell rings
When the children return to Nebo Elementary School on Monday, there will be a familiar face there to greet them. Principal Joyce Poplin has returned to work and is ready for the new year - and a whole stack of new challenges.

Swift Galey official: "We all are really hurt about this one"
Swift Galey confirmed Friday it intends to cease all operations at its Marion facility. The textile manufacturer has been a fixture in McDowell County in various incarnations for decades. Formerly Galey & Lord, the announcement was made that the facility would be closing in 60 days. That will mean unemployment for 283 workers, according to Employment Security Commission Manager Marilyn Williams.
